Quantum mechanics is akin to wild animals because they're both just that – wild. They're totally unpredictable. Just like a lion may look fast asleep one moment before pouncing on its prey, an electron might just pop in and out of existence (where is it going…?). Quantum mechanics introduces quantum entanglement, where two particles become linked in such a way that the state of one instantly affects the other, no matter how far apart they are. Even Albert Einstein was confused by this phenomenon, and called it “spooky action at a distance.”

Quantum mechanics is a branch of physics that studies how the smallest particles in the universe behave. Objects may cease having definite positions and speeds, particles like electrons exist in a range of possibilities until they're observed. One central idea in quantum mechanics is wave-particle duality, which is the idea that particles can behave both like solid objects and like waves. Light plays a big example to this notion, in that it travels as a wave, but also can exist in a “material” way in the form of photons. Electrons are probably one of the most curious things in our universe, and they also spread out like waves and interfere with themselves, creating patterns that seem impossible to predict or interpret.
